Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series Results

September 8, 2012

The Pit Stop USA.com and Joe Hunt Magneto Wingless Sprint Car Series’ combined to draw a great field of 24 open-wheelers.  Group qualifying saw defending track champion Terry Schank Jr  out-pace the field with a stellar 14.685 effort.  Caution-free heat race action saw Sparky Howard, Trevor Schmid, and Geoff Ensign take top honors.  The six lap dash for cash saw young lion Zack Lynskey charge around Howard on the white flag lap to the win.  Twenty three cars made the call to the green flag with Benicia’s Billy Aton blasting into the early lead.  Aton quickly out-paced Lynskey, Schank, and Ensign for the first eight circuits.  A flat left rear tire on lap ten for the leader in turn two slowed the action.  Quick pit work by the Aton’s crew got him back on track at the rear of the pack.  Schank asserted himself and kept a decent four car length lead over the opposition.  A good battle emerged with Ensign dueling high and low with Chris Magoon, and Nick Larson.  Point leader Joe Stornetta who was battling mechanical gremlins all night long finally found high gear and made several key passes from mid-pack.  At the 25-lap twin-checkers it was Schank Jr. in the borrowed Donnie Van Lare #5d holding on for his second win in as many weeks over an impressive Lynskey, Ensign, Magoon, and Larson.

PETALUMA, CA – August 11, 2012:  Sacramento driver Mike Henry was determined to score a win in his second appearance in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series after just missing a trip to victory lane by a mere .027 of a second to Bradley Terrell on July 28th.

Starting from the pole, the former two-time Civil War Champion Henry would have to hold off the challenges of Chase Johnson and Bradley Terrell throughout the event for the win.  Henry also won his heat and was fast qualifier. Chase Johnson challenged Henry early and often in the early stages of the event with Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series point leader Bradley Terrell in hot pursuit.

Terrell took advantage of lapped traffic with an aggressive move to the bottom to get past Johnson in the late stages after the two battled hard for most of the race. David Lindt Jr. flipped hard in the late stages bringing out the red flag and upon the restart Henry never looked back on his way to victory lane followed by Terrell, Johnson, Koen Shaw and Billy Butler.

PETALUMA, CA - July 28, 2012: The Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series continued its recent series of incredible finishes Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway.  Bradley Terrell lived up to his nickname "The BT Express" by charging his way up from his ninth place starting position to win the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series main event in dramatic fashion at Petaluma Speedway. The 21-year-old Sebastopol driver once again showed his tenacious driving style in earning his fifteenth feature win at the 3/8 mile track.  Terrell aggressively stormed through the pack and took the lead from former two-time Civil War Series Champion Mike Henry on lap 17 when Henry got hung up with lapped traffic.  Fast qualifier Henry charged back to challenge Terrell on the final corner and the two crossed the finish line together in a dead heat with the transponder showing Terrell the winner by .027 seconds. Kirk Simpson, Geoff Ensign and Chase Johnson rounded out the top five.

The victory was the second in the past three races for Terrell and the 2010 Petaluma Speedway Champion extended his points lead to 26 over Chase Johnson. Heat race wins went to Bradley Terrell, Billy Butler and Chase Johnson.

PETALUMA, CA. - July 21, 2012:  Seventeen-year-old Chase Johnson took full advantage of his front row starting position by finding his way to victory lane for the first time this season in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series at Petaluma Speedway.

Starting from row two, Richard Bailey pursued Johnson until a lap 10 spin moved Lindt to the second spot.  Johnson had plenty of competition to contend with as five time track champion David Lindt Jr. would pressure him throughout the race, including a daring final lap attempt for the win. Johnson, a fourth generation racer, was cool throughout the feature and consistently hit his marks to capture his second feature win ever on the fast 3/8 mile adobe track.

Johnson completed the flag-to-flag feature win followed by Lindt with his third straight runner up finish, fast qualifier Kirk Simpson, Geoff Ensign, and Art McCarthy.  Richard Bailey worked his way back to third with Bradley Terrell, Ivan Worden, Billy Butler and Roberto Kirby rounding out the top ten.

PETALUMA, CA – JULY 14, 2012: Geoff Ensign continued his winning ways by capturing his third straight win in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series with another outstanding performance on a very well prepared and racy Petaluma Speedway.  Ensign has shown that he can find victory lane with or without a wing on the fast 3/8 mile adobe surface this year.

Zack Lynskey looked to have a great shot at capturing the main event, leading the first 12 laps with Ensign and Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series point leader Joe Stornetta in pursuit. But lap 13 proved to be unlucky for Lynskey when he took the high groove to lap Bill Hopper entering turn one opening the door for Ensign and Stornetta to power by on the bottom.

Ensign never looked back and led all of the remaining laps with Stornetta and Lynskey battling hard for the second position. Lynsky made a great last lap move to sneak by Stornetta at the finish line to claim the second position by a mere .024 seconds. Sparky Howard in his first ride in the Donny VanLare #5D finished fourth followed by fast qualifier Terry Schank Jr. who battled most of the race with a broken right front shock mount. July 7, 2012

PETALUMA, CA – JULY 7, 2012 – Petaluma Speedway hosted their second California Civil War Series event of the season Saturday night, which also was a point race for the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series.  Thirty-two Winged 360 Sprint Cars were on hand at the 3/8 mile adobe track to battle it out in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Stephen Allard of Cameron Park headed into Saturday’s event ranking third in the Civil War Series point standings knowing he had a great opportunity to close in on series point leader Andy Forsberg in the Pit Stop USA sponsored x1 of F&F Racing with second place driver Kyle Hirst away running the KWS Series event at Watsonville.

Allard took full advantage of the opportunity and led wire-to-wire in dominating fashion to secure the victory.  David Lindt, Jr. brought out the evenings only red flag when the #52 Heavy Metal Racing entry flipped in turn 4.  After the restart, Allard had a brief scare on lap 12 when he came perilously close to the turn 1 wall, briefly letting the current Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series point leader Bradley Terrell slip past for the lead.  Allard did a masterful job recovering from the slip and immediately grabbed the lead back from Terrell with the x1 of Andy Forsberg in hot pursuit running third.

Forsberg took advantage of a lap 20 restart to force his way pass Terrell for second place, but didn’t have anything for the #14 car of Allard who was not to be denied his first ever Petaluma Speedway victory and second Civil War Series win of 2012.  Allard’s victory moved him into second place in the California Civil War Series points, only 10 markers behind Forsberg.  Terrell extended his Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series point lead with a solid third place run followed by Greg DeCaires and Chase Johnson.  Richard Bailey, Herman Klein, Mason More, Colby Wiesz and Geoff Ensign rounded out the top ten.

Calistoga’s Mike Benson started the night off with a blistering 12.839 second qualifying lap to secure the fast time for the evening.  Benson was the only car to break the 13 second bracket but unfortunately did not transfer out of his heat race and had to secure his main event starting position by winning the B-Main.  Several other of the faster qualifiers also had to secure transfers through the B-Main including Chase Johnson and Geoff Ensign.  Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series regulars David Lindt, Jr., Bradley Terrell, and Richard Bailey secured heat race wins as did the most recent Civil War Series winner Colby Wiesz.

Geoff Ensign continued his winning ways in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series non-wing event after DJ Johnson’s car was disqualified in post-race inspection.  Ensign started third then grabbed the second place spot from Taylor Simas on lap 17 and tried to chase down the nights fast qualifier #33 of Johnson who had stretched out a big lead on the 14 car field.  Simas finished second followed by Sparky Howard, Clint Simpson and Scott Dupont.  Zack Lynskey, Jeff Lee, Bill Cornwell and Dustin Baxter rounded out the top ten.

June 30, 2012

PETALUMA, CA – JUNE 30, 2012:  Former Petaluma Speedway Champion and current point leader Bradley Terrell made a strong statement that he will be a force to be reckoned with for the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series championship with a thrilling last lap pass for the win in the Winged 360 Sprint Cars Saturday night.

It was clear from the start of qualifying that the strong eighteen car field would have an outstanding racing surface to compete on for round #6 of the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series. Many track veterans commented that it was the best track conditions at the 3/8 mile facility they had seen in many years. Napa’s Richard Bailey set a blistering pace in qualifying with 12.568 second lap followed by former Champion Dave Lindt, Jr., Ryan Rusconi and defending Petaluma Speedway Champion Alissa Geving who made her first Winged 360 Sprint Car appearance of the year in the F&F Racing x1 Pit Stop USA sponsored sprinter normally driven by Andy Forsberg.  Chase Johnson, Billy Butler and Geoff Ensign captured heat race wins showing early on how fast the Petaluma Speedway adobe surface would be for the main event.

Richard Bailey started on the pole of the main event and led the first two circuits before former track Champion Art McCarthy, Jr. took a wild ride into the turn 4 fence, climbing over the wheel of Ryan Rusconi bringing out the only red flag of the feature event.  It was the second flip of the evening for McCarthy and caused a lot of damage to the #19 sprinter ending his evening.

When the race resumed Dave Lindt, Jr. quickly grabbed the lead on lap number three with Bailey and Alissa Geving in hot pursuit.  Lindt began stretching the lead over the following laps, but the real action was heating up behind the third place car of Geving between Bradley Terrell, Chase Johnson, Billy Butler and Geoff Ensign.

Once Terrell got by the x1 of Geving he set his sights on the black and yellow #01 Bailey Brothers machine and the two drivers put on a great show with one slide job after another exchanging positions lap after lap. Once Terrell made the final pass of Bailey, he set his sights on Lindt who was noticibly off his earlier torrid pace.  The last two laps saw Terrell pull a perfect slide job in turn four to get past Lindt and looked to have the win locked up. But the savvy veteran Lindt had other ideas and drove the #52 sprinter deep into turn three with a final slide job attempt, briefly passing Terrell in turn four. But Terrell was not to be denied and got the #43 back by Lindt for one of the most exciting finishes in Petaluma Speedway history.  Richard Bailey finished third, with Chase Johnson and the winner of the previous two Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series events Geoff Ensign finishing fifth.  Brett Rollag, Kirk Simpson, Alissa Geving, Jake Haulot and Ivan Worden rounded out the top ten.

On Saturday, July 7 the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series takes on the California Civil War Sprint Car Series in the second of the three appearances at the Petaluma Speedway 3/8 mile.  The Pit Stop USA Wingless Spec Sprint Car Series will also be on hand for a great night of wheel to wheel action.  Don't miss this one!

PETALUMA, CA – JUNE 9, 2012: Geoff Ensign made it three straight sprint car wins at Petaluma Speedway, this time in the Pit Stop USA Wingless Sprint Car Series against the top drivers from the traveling Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Shootout Series.  The 22 year-old Sebastopol, California driver has been on a roll at the 3/8 mile adobe oval in recent weeks showing he can get it done with or without a wing.

Ensign piloted the beautifully prepared #5V VanLare Steering Repair Maxim to a flawless performance leading all 25 laps on his way to victory lane on the smooth and dry-slick race track. Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Shootout Series point leader Terry Schank Jr. mounted a late race challenge after getting by Scott Hall on lap 17, but Ensign was not to be denied his third straight Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series victory.  The final 18 laps were run under green and Ensign kept to the bottom groove and never gave Hall or Schank an opportunity to seriously challenge for the lead.

Scott Hall finished third, Kody Smith worked his way up from eighth starting position to fourth, and Devon Ostheimer was fifth all the way from ninth starting position.  Zack Lynskey, Angelique Bell, Bret Barney, Sparky Howard, and Clint Simpson rounded out the top ten.

June 2, 2012

JUNE 2, 2012 – PETALUMA, CA: On a breezy June evening that found the Petaluma Speedway 3/8 mile adobe oval tacky and fast, Geoff Ensign captured his second straight Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series victory Saturday night.

The first 9 laps of the feature were some of the most exciting in recent memory as Ensign, Billy Butler and Bradley Terrell fought hard for the top spot. After several laps of two and three wide racing with Butler leading, Terrell stormed to the front and looked like he had the car to beat until he came to a stop in turn two on lap number 10 handing the lead to back to Butler.

Ensign continued to pressure Butler for the lead, and then managed a pass on Lap 12. Ensign worked lapped traffic perfectly while a lightning fast Dave Lindt Jr. climbed from the seventh-starting position to third then passed Butler on Lap 19. Ensign, whose first job in racing was working as a crew member for Lindt, and held him off giving car owner Brett Lay his second straight win and a fantastic birthday present. Butler finished third with Terrell coming all the way from the back to finish fourth and took over the series point lead. Matthew Haulot had a career best fifth place finish. Art McCarthy, Kenny Drew, Ivan Worden, Chase Johnson, and Chase Wood rounded out the top ten.

MAY 19, 2012 - PETALUMA, CA: Stockton's Trevor Schmid came up with the right combination to break Joe Stornetta's three race winning streak to capture his first ever main event win in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway.

Schmid started out the evening on a high note by setting fast time for the sixteen car wingless sprint car field. After starting in the sixth position, Schmid quickly found himself in second position only three laps into the race. A great battle raged for several laps with Zack Lynskey surrendering the lead to Schmid on lap 8. Clint Simpson and Joe Stornetta both found their way to the front before the two got together coming out of turn 4 and sending both drivers to the rear of the field handing the lead back to Schmid on lap 16.

Schmid set the pace for the final 11 laps while Stornetta stormed all the way from the back to finish second. Sparky Howard methodically gained positions from his 12th starting position to third followed by Lynskey and Scott Hall. MAY 12, 2012 - PETALUMA, CA: Joe Stornetta looked a lot more like a seasoned veteran than a 17-year-old driver as he captured his third straight Pit Stop USA Wingless Sprint Car Series victory Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway. The Napa, California teenager drove to his most convincing victory yet against a very competitive field and increased his point lead in the process.

Stornetta led the first two circuits before surrendering the lead to Bill Cornwell on lap 3 then fell to fourth when the hard charging Bradley Terrell began his impressive march to the front. Terrell, making his first start of the season in the Pit Stop USA Wingless Sprint Cars, grabbed the lead from Cornwell on lap 6 and looked to be the car to beat until a mechanical failure sidelined him on lap 10 handing the lead back to Cornwell.

Geoff Ensign, Terry Schank Jr. and Stornetta battled behind Cornwell who was looking for his first ever victory for several laps until Stornetta methodically started making his move towards the front. Stornetta battled hard with Ensign for second place, gaining the spot on lap 19, and then set his sights on Cornwell. Stornetta finally set up Cornwell for the lead on lap 25 and never looked back. Cornwell came home with his career-best second place finish followed by Geoff Ensign in his first ride aboard Jim Vanlare’s number 5V. Terry Schank Jr. finished fourth with Nick Larson rounding out the top 5.

MAY 5, 2012 - PETALUMA, CA:  Defending USAC Western Classic Sprint Car Series Champion Geoff Ensign mastered an unusually dry slick 3/8 mile Petaluma Speedway to capture his first ever winged sprint car victory on Saturday night. Ensign, who has 4 career non-winged sprint car feature wins, made the best of the opportunity to climb aboard Brett Lay’s number 24B Maxim in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series.

Ensign, the 22 year old Sebastopol, California driver, started on the pole and led the 18 car field flag-to-flag with Sacramento’s Billy Butler hot on his rear bumper throughout the feature.  “I knew the only place on the track with any bite, was the bottom,” commented Ensign. Ensign was tenacious in protecting the bottom groove throughout the race keeping the hard charging Butler at bay.

There was a spectacular battle going on behind the top two finishers with Bradley Terrell eventually coming home third.  Brett Rollag, who came into the night as the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series point leader, had a spectacular run climbing all the way to fourth from his 13th starting position. Rollag and former Petaluma Speedway track champion David Lindt Jr. battled hard for several laps before finally capturing the position with six laps to go after a late challenge from Trent Canales. Rollag, who scored his first ever California Civil War Sprint Car Series victory just last week at Petaluma, showed that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with for the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series championship.

Trent Canales came home fifth, with fast qualifier Chase Johnson sixth. Adam McCarthy, Kirk Simpson, Matthew Haulot and Lindt Jr. rounded out the top ten.

Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series regular Brett Rollag had the packed house on the edge of their seats as he drove to a convincing Civil War Series Victory on the lightning fast 3/8 mile Petaluma Speedway Saturday night.  In addition to the victory Rollag comes away from Saturday night's action as the new point leader in the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series at Petaluma Speedway.

Elk Grove’s Kyle Hirst was in hot pursuit waiting for any kind of mistake to snatch the first career Civil War Series victory away but in the end Rollag did a masterful job working lapped traffic to secure the victory. Richard Bailey finished third followed by Justin Sanders, Stephen Allard, Chase Johnson, Sean Becker, Colby Wiesz, and Greg DeCaires.

The race ended a lap early when defending Civil War Champion Andy Forsberg hit the turn four wall when a pitman arm broke and left the car without steering. The six time Civil War Champion was having a very strong run in the Pit Stop USA sponsored number x1 of F&F Racing from the tenth starting position all the to fourth when his night ended against the fourth turn fence.

The Hoosier Tire California Civil War Series opener featured 34 of California's top sprint car competitors in front of one of the largest crowds in recent memory at Petaluma Speedway.  The racing was outstanding through all of the heat races and the exciting 17 car B-Main where fast qualifier Herman Klein had to secure a starting position due to a fifth place position in his heat race.  Klein had set the pace in qualifying with a lightning fast 13:080 second lap.  Heat race wins were scored by Kyle Hirst, Greg DeCaires, David Lindt Jr., and Jeremy Burt.

17 year old Joe Stornetta captured his second victory in a row in the Pit Stop USA Wingless Sprint Car Series after capturing his first ever feature race win last week.  Stornetta stormed to the lead on lap number two leaving Scott Dupont and the rest of the field in hot pursuit.  Nick Larsen, Zack Lynskey, Scott Dupont and Scott Hall rounded out the top 5.  Bob Newberry, Marcus Hardina, Bill Cornwell, Trevor Schmid and Alissa Geving complete the top ten.

The Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series kicked off its inaugural season at Petaluma Speedway in dramatic fashion on Saturday night with two first-time feature winners celebrating victory at the 3/8 mile oval. With a very strong field and a rapidly changing racing surface, the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series Winged 360 Sprint Car division premier feature was anything but predictable.

Brett Rollag started off the evening by capturing fast time. Heat race wins went to Billy Aton, Bradley Terrell and Geoff Ensign. Then it was Benicia’s Billy Aton who had the dialed-in the right setup for the hooked-up track and went on to win the 25 lap Pit Stop USA Winged 360 Sprint Car Series feature. Aton started the feature in the third position and grabbed the lead on lap 12 when leader Richard Bailey, driving a brand new and beautifully prepared A.R.T. chassis got into the wall trying to get around a lapped car ending his night. Bailey had commented earlier in the evening that this was the first all new car he had ever driven and he looked to be the car to beat before his night abruptly ended against the turn two wall.

Trouble also found second place contender Shawn Wright when he cut down his right rear tire trying to pass the same lapped car handing the hard charging Aton the lead. Aton led the remaining laps with Jeremy Phillips, Adam McCarthy, and Trent Canales in hot pursuit over the next six laps. McCarthy later dropped out of the event coming to a stop against the turn 2 wall. Aton was never seriously challenged in the final laps and was declared the winner after Art McCarthy, Jr. flipped in turn 1 bringing out the red on the white flag lap. Kenny Drew was also involved with nowhere to go getting tangled up with McCarthy’s car in the late race incident. This marked Aton’s first career victory at Petaluma Speedway and he looks to be a contender for the Pit Stop USA Sprint Car Series Championship.

Jeremy Phillips finished second and Trent Canales finished third all the way from his 11thstarting position. Fast-qualifier Brett Rollag finished fourth, and rounding out the top ten were Billy Butler, Kirk Simpson, Kenny Drew, heat winner Bradley Terrell, Matthew Haulot, and Art McCarthy Jr. Bradley Terrell and Geoff Ensign both captured heat race wins.

The Pit Stop USA Wingless Sprint Car Division also saw a first time Petaluma Speedway winner as Stockton’s DJ Johnson captured fast time, a heat race win and led the 25 lap feature from flag to flag in a dominating performance. Napa’s Joe Stornetta ran second for the first 10 laps until Zack Lynskey slipped past and held the second place position for the final 15 laps. Stornetta held the third position followed by Clint Simpson, Scott Hall, Bill Cornwell, Scotty Dupont, Gary Nelson Jr., Dustin Baxter, and Bret Barney.
